The Orion (or 4G1x) family of engines are inline 4 cylinder engines which were designed by Mitsubishi to replace their Neptune (4G4x) series. All have cast iron cylinder blocks, alloy heads and overhead camshafts driven by a belt. The Orion series was first introduced in the Mitsubishi Colt in 1978. The Orion ranges from 1.2 to 1.6 Litres in capacity.

As with the Sirius family Hyundai also produced and used these engines. Hyundai's name for the family was Alpha.

4G11

The 4G11 (or G11B as it is sometimes known) is a 1.2 Litre engine displacing 1244cc. It uses a 69.5x82.0mm bore and stroke and has a single overhead camshaft with two valves per cylinder. Power was claimed to be 53 kW when fitted to the first generation Mirage.

The 4G11 was not widely used in Australia but saw service in the first generation Mirage and first and second generation Lancer internationally.

4G12

The 4G12 is a 1.4 Litre engine displacing 1410cc. It has a 74.0x82.0mm bore and stroke. The 4G12 was only available in SOHC, 2 valve per cylinder form.

In Australia the 4G12 can be found in the RA Colt.

4G13

The 4G13 is a 1.3 Litre engine with a displacement of 1298cc. It has a 71.0x82.0 bore and stoke with a 9.5:1 compression ratio. The 4G13 was built in SOHC 3 valve per cylinder form. 2 valves were used for inlet, with one for exhaust. The same engine was also used in some Hyundai's and called G4EH.

In Australia this engine was used in the Proton Wira.

4G15

The 4G15 is tht most common of all the Orion engines. It is a 1.5 Litre engine with a displacement of 1468cc. Its bore and stroke is 75.5x82.0mm and is avaiable in SOHC 2 valve per cylinder, SOHC 3 valve per cylinder, DOHC 3 valve per cylinder and DOHC 4 valve per cylinder forms. SOHC versions use a 9.2:1 compression ratio, while the DOHC versions use a 9.5:1 compression ratio.

The DOHC 16v version was also fitted with MIVEC and/or a turbocharger in some markets.

This engine was also used by Hyundai, the SOHC 8v version being labelled either G4AJ or G4DJ; the SOHC 12v version being called G4EK; the DOHC 12v version being called G4FK; and the DOHC 16v being designated G4EC.

4G15 SOHC 8v

In Australia,, the 8 valve SOHC 4G15 was fitted to the Mitsubishi CA Lancer Hyundai Excel X1 and X2.

4G15 SOHC 12v

In Australia, the 12 valve SOHC 4G15 was fitted to the Mitsubishi Lancer CB,CC,CE, Mitsubishi Mirage CC,CE, Hyundai Excel X3, Hyundai S Coupe and Proton Satria, Persona, Wira and Jumbuck. A turbocharged version was also built by Hyundai for use in the S Coupe.

4G15 DOHC 12v

In Australia, the 12 valve DOHC 4G15 was fitted to the Hyundai Excel X3.

4G15 DOHC 16v

In Australia, the 16 valve DOHC 4G15 was used in the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio.

4G18

The 4G18 is the largest member of the Orion family produced by Mitsubishi. It isa 1.6 Litre engine. It has a displacement of 1584cc and uses a 76.0x87.3mm bore and stoke. It is produced solely in SOHC 16 valve (4 per cylinder form).

In Australia the 4G18 was used in the Proton Waja.

G4ED

The G4ED is a variation of the 4G15 DOHC 16v by Hyundai and was never produced by Mitsubishi. Hyundai bored and stroked the 4G15 to produce a 1.6 Litre engine with a 1599cc displacement. It uses a 76.5x87.0mm bore and stroke and is produced solely in DOHC 16 valve form.

In Australia the G4ED was used in the late model Hyundai Accent.
