A transaxle is the front wheel drive equivalent of a gearbox (transmission) and differential. Both these components are integrated into the one housing.

Instead of power being transmitted to the differential via a propellor shaft, transaxles transmit the power internally via gears. This is claimed by many to result in less "drivetrain" loss.
