The second generation Colt was the first Mitsubishi to be sold in Australia under the Colt name. It was introduced to the market in 1981.
The second generation Colt was a small front wheel drive vehicle available as both a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback.
RA
The RA model was introduced in 1981 as a five-door hatchback with a 1.4 Litre Orion engine and 4 speed manual or 3 speed automatic. It can be distinguished from other models by its sunken in headlights, combo parking and turn indicator lights in the front bumper bar and flat side turn indicators in the front guards.
RB
The RB model was introduced in October 1982. XL and GL trim levels continued with the 1.4 Litre Orion engine and a 1.6 Litre Saturn engine was introduced for the GLX, SE and GSR. The 1.4 Litre was only available with 4 speed manual while the 1.6 Litre models were available with 4 speed manual or 3 speed automatic.
RC
The RC Colt was introduced in April 1984. It was the first Australian Colt to introduce the four door sedan in addition to the hatchback. The same engine and transmission options continued. The RC can be distinguished from other Colt models by it's six slat grille.
RD
The RD was introduced in October 1986. At launch the same engine and transmission options as the RB and RC were available, with a 5 speed manual becoming optional on 1.6 Litre models from August 1987.
RE
The RE was the final model in first of the Australian Colts, being introduced in September 1988. It was available until 1991. It continued the same engine and transmission options as the RD and introduced a revised "mailbox" style grille.
